    In new car development, crash and sled tests are conducted in order to minimize the passengers’ risk of injury. Both complete vehicles and single components such as airbags or belt systems must be analyzed. Car manufacturers need to conform to numerous standards and regulations. Many manufacturers perform further testing to make sure that they achieve the highest level of safety. More new vehicle models are being developed than ever before. TraceCam offers the enhanced productivity and efficiency that is required to shorten test cycle times.

    AICON has already made its mark as a leading supplier of optical metrology for vehicle safety testing with its photogrammetry measurement system DPA-Pro and camera calibration software. AICON also offers two complementary systems:

     

     

    How TraceCam works

     

    The TraceCam system consists of:

  • A measuring head, comprising of four high resolution digital cameras each with an infrared ring flash,

    •  

  • A portable PC for system control equipped with AICON 3D Studio software and the Dupos module,

    •  

  • A wireless probe, and accessories to target points on the dummy.

    •  

    The synchronized cameras capture 3D object points at a frequency of up to 5 measurements per second. The points to be positioned on the dummy are identified by fixed targets or by target adapters. TraceCam can also be used as a portable Coordinate Measuring Machine when used in combination with a wireless probe.

    Dummy positioning

     

    For portability, the TraceCam measuring head is integrated into a cart equipped with a PC for system control, a uninterruptible power supply and accessories. TraceCam can therefore be moved quickly and easily and is immediately ready for operation. No setup time is required. The infrared flashes allows for reliable measurement without regard for ambient light conditions.

    The system allows for the measurement of additional coordinates, distances or angles with the probe according to a pre-programmed measuring plan. The results are displayed in a measurement report. Customized processing of data by means of an XML export is also available.

    Application for both sled and crash barrier facility

    AICON’s TraceCam is the only system for dummy positioning that can simultaneously record multiple points, all in vehicle 3D coordinate system. Dummy positioning, including preparation and measurement of additional points, takes only a few minutes. The portability of the system makes it suitable for dummy positioning both in vehicles at crash barrier facilities and on bucks for sled tests purposes. High positioning accuracy guarantees reproducible, user independent results and makes comparison to simulation data easy.
